How to check whether ChatGPT and Claude name your business when someone asks who to use, score your site for it for free, and fix what’s stopping them.
Before you start
The tool is called GEO Optimizer. It’s free and open source. There’s a free web version with no account needed, and a version you run through Claude Code. The company behind it also sells paid monitoring plans. You don’t need them for anything here.
It can’t make ChatGPT recommend you. What it does is make your site easier for AI tools to read and quote. Who gets named also depends on what’s written about you elsewhere, so reviews and listings still matter.
Some fixes aren’t yours to make. A lot of the fixes are technical files that sit behind your site, not words on the page. If someone else built your site, you’ll probably hand those ones to them. Step 3 sorts that out for you.
This sits alongside your Google SEO. It doesn’t replace it.
Step 1: See who gets named right now
Open ChatGPT and Claude and ask each of them this, the way a customer would:
I'm looking for [what you do] in [your suburb or city]. Who would you recommend and why? Give me 5 names.
Run it 2 or 3 times with different wording, like “best [what you do] near [suburb]” or “who should I use for [the job you do]”. Screenshot every answer.
You’ll know it worked when you’ve got a list of who keeps getting named, and you know whether you’re on it. This is your before shot for Step 5.
Step 2: Score your site
Pick one.
No code: go to geoready.dev, paste your homepage URL and run the free audit. No account needed.
In Claude Code: paste this in and swap in your site:
Install GEO Optimizer from https://github.com/Auriti-Labs/geo-optimizer-skill and run an audit on https://yoursite.com. If my site has a sitemap, audit that too and show me the weakest pages first. Then explain the results in plain English. I'm not technical.
The score is out of 100. 86 and up is excellent, 68 to 85 is good, 36 to 67 means the foundations are missing, and 35 or under is critical.
You’ll know it worked when you’ve got a score and a list of recommendations. Copy the whole report, you need it for the next step.
Step 3: Turn the report into a to-do list
Paste the report into Claude with this:
Here's a GEO audit of my business website. I'm not technical.
Sort every issue into 3 groups:
1. Things I can change myself in my website editor
2. Things I need to send to whoever built my site
3. Things that don't really matter for a business my size
Put anything that stops AI tools reading my site at all at the very top. For each item, tell me in one line what to do. For group 2, write me a short message I can send my web person, listing exactly what I need.
[paste the report]
You’ll know it worked when you’ve got a short list you can do yourself and a message ready to send for the rest.
Step 4: Fix the wording on your main pages
The audit also checks how quotable your pages are. Take your most important page, usually your services page, and paste its text into Claude with this:
Here's the text from my [services] page. Rewrite it so an AI tool could quote it as an answer to a customer's question.
Rules:
- Keep every fact exactly as it is. Don't add any numbers, claims or reviews that aren't already here.
- Turn each heading into the question a customer would actually ask.
- Start each section with a one-sentence direct answer, then the detail.
- Keep my tone. Don't make it sound like a brochure.
[paste your page text]
You’ll know it worked when every section opens with a sentence you’d be happy to hear read out as the answer.
If you’re in Claude Code, you can also get it to write the missing technical files for you:
Use GEO Optimizer's fix command on https://yoursite.com to generate the missing files, but don't apply anything to my site. Save them to a folder and explain in one line each what every file is for and where it goes.
Step 5: Check again
Once the fixes are live, give it a few weeks, then rerun your Step 1 questions exactly as you asked them the first time and compare against your screenshots. Rerun the Step 2 audit too, the score should have moved.
You’ll know it worked when the score’s up, and you’re either on the list or closer to it than your competitors think.
Troubleshooting
The score is low but the site looks fine. Usually your site is blocking AI crawlers without you knowing, either in a file called robots.txt or through a security setting at your host, like Cloudflare. Check those lines of the report first, they matter most.
The free web audit won’t run on your site. Use the Claude Code option in Step 2 instead.
Claude Code says the command isn’t found. Tell it “install whatever you need to run this first”, then paste the Step 2 prompt again.
The rewrite added something that isn’t true. Tell Claude to redo it against your original text and keep every fact exactly as it was.
You fixed everything and ChatGPT still doesn’t name you. Your site is only part of it. What’s written about you on other sites, like reviews and listings, feeds those answers too.
